Think Outside the Feed

More than ever, innovation in the design world is suffering. The endless scroll has worked itself into nearly everyone’s day-to day-life, and it’s increasingly easy to quickly recycle content we see on social media. This phenomenon can be likened to an Ouroboros, the snake eating its own tail. Instead of creative expression coming from a variety of sources, visibility is now largely limited to what a select few corporations determine is acceptable through algorithms in a way that only pays lip service to our humanity.

Social media is vital for the future, but it must be used in a way that respects the deeper needs of all. Designers have a distinct advantage here, but instead of pushing boundaries, the trend has been to retreat to the safety of many. Fortunately, the level of interconnectedness we have today allows us to rally together and define what the future looks like.

It’s time to kill the snake.
